Ambient computing examples are systems that sense what is happening around them and act without you opening an app: an AI scribe that listens to a doctor’s visit and drafts the note, a thermostat that learns from motion, traffic lights that adapt to live traffic, or a car that notices you are drowsy. This guide covers twelve real examples in 2026, how strong the evidence behind each one is, and the risks.

Key takeaways

  • → Google described ambient computing in 2019 as devices that “fade into the background, working together with AI and software to assist you.” (Google)
  • → Healthcare has the strongest evidence: a 2026 JAMA study linked AI scribes to 13.4 fewer minutes of EHR time per 8 scheduled patient hours. (JAMA)
  • → At Mass General Brigham, ambient documentation was associated with a 21.2% absolute drop in burnout after 84 days. (Mass General Brigham)
  • → Pittsburgh’s adaptive Surtrac signals cut travel times by about 25% and wait times by 40% in their pilot. (Carnegie Mellon)
  • → Since July 7, 2026, every new car sold in the EU needs a camera-based driver distraction warning. (European Commission)
  • → The smart-home standard Matter launched in October 2022 and reached version 1.6 in June 2026. (CSA)
  • → Ambient devices fail too: Humane’s AI Pin stopped working on February 28, 2025, and Amazon is closing its Go and Fresh stores. (TechCrunch, Amazon)

1What is ambient computing?

Ambient computing is technology that is spread through your surroundings and responds to context, such as presence, voice, motion or location, instead of waiting for you to open an app. Google’s Rick Osterloh described it in 2019 as devices that “fade into the background.” The idea goes back to Mark Weiser’s 1991 vision of computers that disappear into everyday life.
Ambient computing — “Your devices fade into the background, working together with AI and software to assist you throughout your day. We call this ambient computing.” (Rick Osterloh, Google, 2019)

The roots are older. Mark Weiser wrote in 1991 that “the most profound technologies are those that disappear” (Weiser, 1991). In Europe, the IST Advisory Group (ISTAG) popularised “ambient intelligence” from 1999, imagining people “surrounded by intelligent and intuitive interfaces embedded in everyday objects” (ERCIM News). Walt Mossberg titled his final column, in May 2017, “The Disappearing Computer” (The Verge).

Ambient vs automation. A timer that switches the lights on at 7 p.m. is automation: it follows a fixed rule. An ambient system notices that someone came home after dark and adjusts to that. Ambient computing is closely related to zero UI, which is about interacting without a screen, and to calm technology, which is about how much attention technology demands.

2How ambient computing works

Every ambient system has the same six layers: sensors capture signals, a network connects devices, software infers what is going on, a decision is made, something acts, and a human can review or override it. Most failures happen in the last layer, when people cannot see or undo what the system did.
Layer What it does Real example
1. Sensing Captures presence, sound, motion, location mmWave presence sensors such as the Aqara FP2 detect people even when they sit still
2. Connectivity Lets devices talk to each other Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread, set up via Bluetooth LE
3. Inference Works out what is happening An AI scribe turns a conversation into a clinical note
4. Decision Chooses what to do Adaptive traffic signals pick the next phase
5. Action Changes something in the world A thermostat changes the temperature
6. Human review Lets people see, correct or undo Clinicians review and sign the drafted note

312 ambient computing examples

The twelve examples below run from hospitals to living rooms, cars, cities, shops, hotels and wearables. For each, the evidence label tells you whether results come from peer-reviewed research, a health system’s own report, a vendor claim or simply a product launch. Healthcare and traffic have the strongest evidence; wearables have the weakest track record.

1. Ambient AI scribes in healthcare Peer-reviewed

AI scribes listen to a consultation and draft the clinical note for the doctor to review. In a JAMA study of 8,581 clinicians at five academic health systems, 1,809 of whom used scribes, adoption was associated with 13.4 fewer minutes of EHR time and 16.0 fewer minutes of documentation time per 8 scheduled patient hours (JAMA, 2026). The American Hospital Association calls the decrease “modest” (AHA).

Individual health systems report more:

  • Cooper University Health Care: 4.15 minutes saved per patient, “approximately one hour or more saved daily” (AHA).
  • Intermountain Health: 27% less time in notes per appointment with Microsoft Dragon Copilot, for clinicians with 10 or more encounters (AHA).
  • Cleveland Clinic: two minutes less per appointment and 14 minutes less per day writing and reviewing notes (Cleveland Clinic).
  • Mass General Brigham: a 21.2% absolute reduction in burnout at 84 days; Emory saw a 30.7% absolute increase in documentation-related well-being at 60 days (Mass General Brigham).
  • Stanford: in a pilot with 45 physicians and 17,428 encounters, total EHR time fell by 19.95 minutes a day (JAMIA, 2025).

The tools are now mainstream products. Microsoft launched Dragon Copilot on March 3, 2025, combining dictation with ambient listening (Microsoft), and Abridge says it is used by more than 300 of the largest US health systems (Abridge, vendor claim).

2. A thermostat that learns from motion Product launch

Google’s fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, announced August 6, 2024 at $279.99, “learns which temperatures you choose most often or changes in behavior based on motion detected in your home” (Google).

3. Presence sensing that knows you are still there Product launch

Classic motion sensors switch lights off when you sit still. Millimetre-wave radar sensors such as the Aqara FP2 detect presence “even for the slightest movements” and can divide a room into zones (Aqara).

4. One smart-home language: Matter Standard

Ambient homes need devices from different brands to cooperate. The Connectivity Standards Alliance released Matter 1.0 on October 4, 2022 (CSA). It runs over Wi-Fi and Thread (CSA). Version 1.5 added cameras in November 2025 (CSA), and 1.6 in June 2026 added more “context-driven control” (CSA).

5. Generative voice assistants at home Product launch

Amazon introduced Alexa+ on February 26, 2025 at $19.99 a month, free for Prime members (Amazon). Edison Research estimates that 39% of Americans aged 12 and older, about 112 million people, own a smart speaker (Edison Research, 2026). More on voice in our zero UI examples.

6. Cars that notice a tired driver Regulation

Under the EU General Safety Regulation, drowsiness and attention warning became mandatory for all new vehicles from July 2024 (German Ministry of Transport), and camera-based advanced driver distraction warning for all new vehicles from July 7, 2026 (European Commission). Tesla’s cabin camera monitors attentiveness while its supervised self-driving is engaged (Tesla).

7. Paying for fuel from the driver’s seat Product launch

Since September 2023, Mercedes-Benz drivers in Germany can start fuelling from the car and pay by fingerprint (Mastercard). It splits ambient car tech into two kinds: safety automation (example 6) and invisible transactions (this one).

8. Traffic lights that adapt in real time Pilot data

Carnegie Mellon’s Surtrac system lets traffic signals react to live traffic. Its pilot in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty produced “an overall 25% reduction in travel times, a 40% reduction in wait times, and a projected reduction in emissions of over 20%” (Carnegie Mellon).

−40%
Wait time at intersections in the Surtrac adaptive-signal pilot in Pittsburgh, alongside a 25% cut in travel time. Results come from the pilot area, not a whole city.

9. Checkout-free retail, scaled back Partly retired

In April 2024 Amazon replaced Just Walk Out in its larger Fresh stores with Dash Carts, saying customers preferred them (Amazon). On January 27, 2026 it announced the closure of all Amazon Go and Fresh stores, while Just Walk Out runs in more than 360 third-party locations in five countries (Amazon). Smart fitting rooms are older: in 2015, Ralph Lauren’s Fifth Avenue store used mirrors that recognise items by RFID (Digiday). In retail, ambient assistance (a mirror that helps) is very different from ambient personalisation (a store that profiles you).

10. Hotel rooms that open with your phone Product launch

Apple Wallet can hold hotel room keys so an iPhone or Apple Watch unlocks the room at participating hotels (Apple), and Hilton’s Digital Key does the same through its app (Hilton). In February 2026 the CSA released Aliro 1.0, a standard for access credentials that includes ultra-wideband for hands-free unlocking (CSA).

11. Wearables that listen all day Mixed track record

Omi is a shipping, open-source AI pendant (Omi). Meta bought Limitless, maker of a pendant that records and transcribes conversations, on December 5, 2025 (Reuters). Humane’s $499 AI Pin stopped working on February 28, 2025, after HP bought most of the company’s assets for $116 million (TechCrunch). A smaller, older example: Android’s Adaptive Brightness, built with DeepMind in 2018, learns how you set the slider in different light (Google DeepMind).

12. Proactive physical security Vendor case study

Ambient.ai sells computer vision that analyses existing security cameras to flag threats in real time. The Harker School, a K-12 school, is one of its published customer stories (Ambient.ai). Before buying, ask vendors for false-positive and false-negative rates, response latency and bias testing.

A magnifying glass over a thick report, a stapled stack and a single flyer
A peer-reviewed study and a product launch are not the same kind of proof. The table below sorts every example by evidence type.

4How strong is the evidence for each example?

Only a few ambient computing examples have independent, peer-reviewed results: healthcare AI scribes lead, followed by traffic signal pilots. Most smart-home and retail examples rest on product launches or vendor claims. Filter the table by evidence type, or sort it by domain, to see which claims you can rely on.
Example Domain Key result Evidence
Ambient AI scribes (5 health systems) Healthcare −13.4 min EHR, −16.0 min documentation per 8 patient hours Peer-reviewed

Cooper University Health Care Healthcare 4.15 min per patient Health system report
Intermountain Health Healthcare −27% time in notes Health system report
Cleveland Clinic Healthcare −14 min per day Health system report
Surtrac adaptive signals Cities −25% travel time, −40% wait time Pilot data
Abridge adoption Healthcare 300+ large US health systems Vendor claim

What users and clinicians say

The health-system reports above are positive. Reddit is more mixed. In r/medicine, a May 2026 thread titled “Are the AI scribes getting any better?” drew 269 upvotes and 176 comments, mostly about editing time. At home, the biggest 2025–2026 threads in r/googlehome (464 upvotes, 258 comments) and r/alexa (256 comments) were about assistants that became less predictable after their AI upgrades.

“I tried 1 last year. It was okay, but the amount of editing that I was having to do did not really help me out at all.”

r/medicine, May 2026

“It can generate polished notes, but it still misses details, misinterprets conversations, and occasionally documents things that weren’t actually said.”

r/Residency, August 2026

“That’s why I’m sticking with Assistant as long as possible, since at least it’s straightforward.”

r/googlehome, December 2025

The host chose the speaker; the guests did not. Consent from bystanders is one of the main risks of ambient computing.

5Risks and failures of ambient computing

The main risks are always-on data collection, weaker local privacy options, unclear consent for people who never chose the device, and products that disappear. Amazon paid $25 million over children’s Alexa recordings, ended a local voice-processing option in 2025, and Humane’s AI Pin stopped working less than a year after launch.
$25M
What Amazon agreed to pay in 2023 after the FTC and Justice Department charged it with keeping children’s Alexa voice recordings and undermining deletion requests.
FTC, May 31, 2023
  • Less local processing. From March 28, 2025, Amazon ended Echo’s “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” option, which had kept audio out of Amazon’s cloud (AP).
  • Bystanders. A pendant that records conversations also records people who never agreed to it. Ask how the device signals that it is recording.
  • Disappearing products. When a company shuts down, an ambient device can become useless overnight, as Humane’s customers found (TechCrunch).
  • Infrastructure cost. Checkout-free stores need cameras, models and operations behind the scenes. Amazon’s retreat shows that the economics matter as much as the experience.
  • Over-trust. AI scribes still require clinicians to review every note. The JAMA authors found modest effects and no significant change in after-hours EHR time (JAMA).

6Evaluate an ambient computing use case

Before you build or buy an ambient system, check five things: is there independent evidence, does it run locally or in the cloud, can people see and undo what it does, do bystanders know they are being sensed, and does it still work if the vendor disappears. The tool below turns those checks into a quick verdict.

Ambient use case check

If the ambient system you are evaluating is an AI-built app, the same questions apply to where its data lives. See our guide to Lovable Cloud vs Supabase, and the wider theme of this site: what happens beyond the UI.

Frequently asked questions

What is an example of ambient computing?

An AI scribe that listens to a doctor’s appointment and drafts the note is one of the best-documented examples. Others include the Nest Learning Thermostat, presence sensors, adaptive traffic signals and driver-drowsiness warnings in cars. Sources: JAMA, Google.

What is ambient computing in simple terms?

Technology that works in the background of your surroundings and responds to what is happening, instead of waiting for you to open an app. Google described it as devices that “fade into the background.” Source: Google.

Who coined ambient computing?

The idea goes back to Mark Weiser’s 1991 essay on computers that disappear. The EU’s ISTAG popularised “ambient intelligence” from 1999, and Google adopted “ambient computing” for its hardware strategy in 2019. Sources: Weiser, ERCIM.

Do ambient AI scribes really save doctors time?

Yes, but less than some vendors suggest. A 2026 JAMA study across five health systems found 16.0 fewer minutes of documentation per 8 scheduled patient hours and called the effect modest. Individual systems report more, such as 14 minutes a day at Cleveland Clinic. Sources: JAMA, Cleveland Clinic.

Is ambient computing the same as the Internet of Things?

Not quite. IoT describes connected devices; ambient computing is what those devices do together when they sense context and act. Standards such as Matter make that cooperation possible. Source: CSA.

What are the privacy risks of ambient computing?

Always-on sensors can collect more than people expect, including from bystanders. Amazon paid $25 million in 2023 over children’s Alexa recordings and ended a local processing option for Echo in 2025. Sources: FTC, AP.
